Jeep's Wrangler-based Pickup Truck Is Coming

Jeep fans have been asking for a pickup truck for quite some time and their prays have finally been answered. It's finally happening and should reach production in late 2017. This was confirmed at the Detroit Auto show by Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne and Jeep CEO Mike Manley. There have been a few ideas from Jeep in the past, like the Gladiator concept from the 2005 Detroit Auto Show but never a production model. This all changes next year and we'll see a pickup version straight from the factory.

Detroit News had a conversation with Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne and he confirmed that the pickup truck and the standard Wrangler will be built in the Toledo, Ohio facility where the current Wrangler is assembled. Mike Manley also told Detroit News that, "Sergio and I work very, very closely on the Keep production portfolio, and both of us have been a fan of potential Wrangler pickup," he said. "For me, there is a historical place in our lineup for it."

If you've been keeping up with the news about Jeeps concept pickups you probably remember the well-known Jeep J-12 that was produced for the annual Moab Easter Jeep Safari off-roading event back in 2012. The J-12's Designer, Kyle Evans said, "If there was a guiding principal or theme behind the J-12 Concept, it was grandpa's fishing truck."

The new Jeep Wrangler lineup is expected to offer a gas V6, as well as a turbocharged four-cylinder and an EcoDiesel-branded diesel engine. Some say there are rumors of a possible hybrid powertrain as well. We won't know for sure which of these engines will be offered on the pickup version but we can expect one gas engine and a diesel engine. The idea of a diesel Jeep Pickup is something everyone would love.
